As we approach Commencement, the excitement of entering the job market also brings the risk of encountering job scams, which can significantly impact students' career trajectories. Cybercriminals often take advantage of eager graduates looking for their first job. These scams can lead to wasted time, lost money, and unnecessary stress. Use the tips below to be aware of common job scams.

Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Offers

Be wary of job offers that arrive unexpectedly via email, text, or social media, especially those promising high pay for little work. Scammers sometimes impersonate faculty or others you might know. Remember: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

Take Action:
Discuss any suspicious offers with Career Services or reach out to the Information Security and Privacy Office for help verifying if the communication you received is legitimate or a potential scam.

Research the Employer

Scammers frequently use the names of reputable companies to gain trust, so it's essential to verify a company's legitimacy. If you’re uncertain, searching for the company name with terms like "scam" or "complaint" can reveal potential issues reported by others.

Take Action: Always verify the company’s legitimacy by checking their official website, looking for reviews on Glassdoor or the Better Business Bureau, and confirming contact details.
