Information Security & Privacy Training
Maintaining the security and privacy of both New School and personal information is key to ensuring the community is protected from cybercrime and disruption. The Information Security & Privacy Office is committed to teaching our community members to recognize and react appropriately when they encounter phishing emails, business email scams, and the full range of malware, including ransomware.
To assist us in this mission the Information Security and Privacy Office has contracted with SANS Institute, one of the leading cybersecurity and privacy education organizations, to deliver a series of courses and modules to train and educate the New School community on cybersecurity and privacy.
SANS Cybersecurity Awareness Training
Required for: All full-time staff and all full-time faculty
Cadence: Training is required when an employee is hired and then at set intervals throughout the year as directed by the Information Security & Privacy Office.
Training Launch Information
Training for various areas of the university rolled out in October, 2023 with the following steps:
- The Information Security & Privacy Office will send an introductory email in advance of the training launch to all staff and faculty in a designated area.
- After receiving this email, faculty and staff will receive a notification from SANS using the sender name The New School <system@litmos.com> . This email will include information to set up a training account on the SANS Litmos platform. All end users are encouraged to set up their accounts as quickly as possible.
- Once faculty and staff have enrolled in the training platform they will begin receiving training assignments by email from the system@litmos.com email address. Trainings can be tracked and accessed via the training platform (see screenshot below).
Required Training
Training Assignment 1: Knowledge Pre-check & Initial Training Modules
A 30-question multiple choice assessment that will ask questions to determine your level of knowledge on 12 different areas of cybersecurity. Any areas that are identified as being below the required proficiency will then be covered by short training modules to help close the identified knowledge gaps.
Additional Training Assignments
Once the knowledge pre-check and any required training modules have been completed, you will be assigned a short micro-course every two months. The micro-courses will cover a wide variety of privacy and cybersecurity topics and will take no more than five minutes to complete.
