How to Enable DataSet Email Notifications (How to Configure the SMPT Server)

An email notification can be sent to a user when a dataset is not receiving any values. A DataSet that is not receiving values notifies the admin that a network connectivity issue or a field device issue has occurred.

  1. Configure the Messages Service.

  2. Configure the Historian.

Configure the Messages Service

  1. Open the Canary Admin. Select the 'Messages' tile. The Messages service handles all e-mails sent by the product.

  2. Ensure the 'Suspend Email Notifications' box is unchecked.

  3. Contact your Network Administrator to find the name of the mail server that sends out mail through the SMTP protocol. Enter the SMTP server name in the 'SMPT Server:' field.

  1. Enter the correct port number, the default is 25. When using authentication, the port number switches to 587. The SMPT Server determines whether authentication is used or not.

  2. Enter an email address in the 'From:' field. This email address is used to send all Canary System emails.

  3. Enter the admin's email address in the 'To:' field. This address is the recipient of all DataSet notification emails.

Unselecting the 'Use Authentication' checkbox compromises network security which may create problems for your operation such as massive amounts of spam email.

Configure the Historian

  1. Open the Canary Admin on the machine with the Historian Server installed on it. Select the 'Historian' tile.

  2. Select a DataSet that is receiving data from a remote Sender Service. Local Senders do not cache data.

  3. Stay within the 'Datasets' tab. Under 'SETTINGS' enable the 'Email if no data received in...' checkbox.

  1. Alter the time according to the tag update rate on your dataset. Some tags send a new value every few minutes while other record new values on a sub-second basis.

  2. Enter a time that is greater than the expected update rate, yet not too much greater. Keep in mind that notifying the Admin of an issue as soon as possible is what prevents data loss. When the selected Dataset has not received any data in the specified time frame, the DataSet tile appears with a red dot in the Canary Admin.
