Removing and Reinstalling The Lock Core

Part I: Tightening the lock core screws

  1. Remove these two screws (blue arrows). This will allow the lock core to be completely removed. You may have to wiggle it loose a little!

  1. Tighten the 2 screws below to secure the lock body to the mounting plate. If possible I would recommend adding some loctite to these since they have already come loose.

3. Reinsert the lock core and the screws from step 1. If these tighten down nicely, you are done! If not, read on.

Part II: Retrieving the nuts if needed

The screws from step 1 above thread into a couple of nuts on the other side (identified in the photo below) that are held from spinning by the plastic controller housing. These nuts are located inside the controller compartment, which is the area in front of your battery.

It is possible for these nuts to be pushed out of the housing. During reinstall, if the screws won't tighten it is probably because these nuts have been pushed out of their housing and fallen into the controller compartment. You will need to go into the controller compartment to retrieve the nuts and put them back in place.

First, remove the cover to the controller compartment. It is held in place by two screws. It is located on the front side of the rack, just behind your saddle.

Take a photo to remember how the components are arranged - getting them back into place correctly can be tricky.

Next, pull out the controller and other components. You do not need to unplug anything, just set aside.

You will see two recesses where the nuts should be located. You will also find the one or both nuts, possibly on the floor of the compartment.

Hold each nut in place with your fingers or with tweezers while screwing in the lock core screws from the other side.

When the lock core is secure, replace the components in the controller compartment and put the cover back on.

IMPORTANT: The tabs on BOTH SIDES of the controller cover MUST snap into place in order to protect your components from weather. If one of the tabs does not snap fully into place, you are not done - rearrange the components to make sure the cover is fitted properly. Only then can you fasten the screws that hold the controller compartment cover.
