Registering your residence in Germany
When working in Germany, you need your unique Tax ID. In order to receive your own Tax ID, you first need to register in your city's Town Hall.
Let's do the step-by-step process using Munich as an example.
First, you need to book an appointment at the Munich Town Hall via their website. Scroll down to find the right button.
- Depending on your situation, choose the right registration. In this example, we register a single person moving to Germany by themselves.
- Choose one of the proposed Bürgerbüros and book your appointment in the free slot.
- Fill in your personal data and confirm by clicking on "Reservierung abschließen"
You're done! You'll get an email reminder for your appointment with your code. You will need the code again on the day of the appointment to know to which room you should go to based on what you'll see on the screen.
⚠️ Remember to bring all the necessary documents to the appointment! You need:
The Registration Form you can download here
A letter from your landlord stating that you have a rental contract with them
Your ID and/or Passport
Please double-check the Town Hall website to have updated information on the documents you may need to register.
When do I get my tax ID?
A few weeks after your registration, you will get a letter to your registered address with your Tax ID. Please fill in this information on your BambooHR profile as soon as you get it. As long as you can't provide your ID to the Tax Office, it will charge you the highest percentage of taxes, which you will get back as soon as you can provide your Tax ID.
