We’re pleased to announce expanded gender affirming care benefits aimed to foster an inclusive workplace and support the health and wellbeing of New School employees. As of June 1st, The New School’s Aetna medical plans will cover an expanded range of gender affirming care services for all plan participants.
Most plans already offer coverage for gender affirmation surgeries in addition to hormone therapy. The plans will now provide coverage for additional gender affirming care procedures including:
- Voice modification surgeries and therapy
- Facial reconstructive procedures
- Tracheal shave/reduction
- Hair removal (Electrolysis, laser treatment, etc.)
- Hair removal for reconstructive surgery

We will continue to review and assess our health plans and practices in accordance with guidance provided by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health. As we’ve developed these plan updates, we’ve also engaged in an ongoing dialogue with members of the University Gender Affirming Care working group, formed by the university’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). This working group advocated for these improvements and worked constructively to address the needs of trans and non-binary individuals within our community.
