Maximum Credit Hour Policy

Introduction

This policy defines the maximum credit hours a student may register for at The New School (TNS) by level, program, or term.

Purpose

This policy provides guidance for students about the maximum allowable credit hours they may register for during a given term based on their level or program. Maximum credit guidelines are inclusive of dual enrollment at another institution while also registered at The New School. These guidelines are in accordance with institution and federal financial aid policy.

Scope

This policy applies to all students at The New School. This policy also applies specifically to the fall, spring, and summer terms as defined by the Academic Calendar Policy.

Responsibilities

In the process of setting up registration, the Office of the University Registrar ensures that the appropriate limits are set for each term based on the level and program.

While assisting students with registration, Academic Advisors ensure that students are aware of the maximum number of credits a student may register for. As needed, advisors will assist students in mapping out their registration plan to ensure all requirements are met within a timely manner without requiring overloads.

Student Accounts and Financial Aid will review, bill, and disburse aid awards in accordance with these guidelines.

Policy

Undergraduate students may register for a maximum of 18 credits per term, except students participating in the BA/BFA program who may register for a maximum of 21 credits per term and students in the BM Voice and BM Instrumental Performance, who may register for a maximum of 19 credits per term.

Visiting undergraduate students may register for a maximum of 18 credits per term.

In the College of Performing Arts, graduate students in the MA or MM degrees may register for a maximum of 17 credits per term. Graduate students in the MFA degree may register for a maximum of 15 credits per term. Students in the Professional Studies Diploma (PDPL) degree program may register for a maximum of 12 credits per term.

Graduate students in Parsons School of Design (New York or Paris campuses) may register for a maximum of 19 credits per term. This applies to all graduate programs.

MA and PhD students (with the exception of those in the Creative Publishing and Clinical Psychology programs) in the New School for Social Research may register for a maximum of 9 credits per term with an additional 3 audit credits per term. Such students may also petition to enroll in up to 12 credits per term with an additional 3 audit credits per term with Dean’s Office approval.

MA students in the Creative Publishing Program in the New School for Social Research may enroll in 15 credits per term with an additional 3 audit credits per term. PhD Clinical Psychology students may take up to 13 credits per term with an additional 3 audit credits per term.

In the Schools of Public Engagement, graduate students in the Documentary Media Studies Certificate program, the MA in Media Studies program, or the MA in Media Management may register for a maximum of 12 credits per term. All other graduate students in the Schools of Public Engagement may register for a maximum of 15 credits per term.

Visiting graduate students may register for a maximum of 19 credits per term.
