Using Variable Credits - ADMIN Side of PowerSchool

Variable Credits can be used when it is not known how many credits a student or group of students will earn until the end of the course, or when students within a course earn different amounts of credits in the same course.
Examples may include Work Experience (from 3 to 10 credits), or Special Projects (from 1 to 5 credits), etc.

*This DOES NOT apply to CTS Courses since credits are earned using single credit Modules.

FROM THE ADMIN SIDE OF POWERSCHOOL

The Variable Credits option must be applied to each course "section" and can be set in 2 different ways:

A. One Section at a Time

  1. Open up the course section for which you want to set Variable Credits.
  2. Near the bottom of the page, you will see two fields that must be set to "Yes" to enable Variable Credits.
(located just above the "Alberta Information" section)

  3. Click SUBMIT.

B. Multiple Sections at Once

  1. From the PowerSchool Start Page, click on School Management > Academics > Set up Variable Credits from the left menu.
  2. Use the Filter options at the top of the page to display the sections you need to edit.
(e.g., Toggle the Course Name checkbox and type in the name of the course to be set. Click Search)

  3. Set the Variable Awarded Credit column and the Variable Attempted Credit column to "Yes" for all sections you wish to change.

  4. Click Save.

Once the appropriate sections have been set to YES, the teacher gradebooks in PowerTeacher Pro will be updated to allow entry of attempted and earned credits.
*IMPORTANT:
1. Teachers MUST ensure that the credit value being entered in each column is a valid credit offering for the specified course.
2. Teachers MUST ensure that BOTH columns contain the same value. This means that regardless of how many credits were attempted, both columns should contain the value of credits that were AWARDED.
