Benefit Changes Due to Qualifying Life Event

Outside of the Open Enrollment period, you can enroll/add dependents to the insurance plan offered by the university, make changes to your current plans, or cancel your/your dependent’s coverage when you or your dependents experience a "qualifying life event," including:

  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Change in your marital status
  • Loss of other insurance coverage outside of the university (for you or your dependents)
  • Gain of other insurance coverage) outside of the university (for you or your dependents

You have 30 days from the date of the qualifying life event to enter changes, enroll/cancel the plan coverage. Review Benefits - Change in Status (Qualifying Life Event) for additional information.

Supporting Documents Required

You must provide supporting documentation to validate the life event which applies to you, to initiate the insurance enrollment/cancelation or change:

  • Birth/Adoption of child(ren): Copy of the birth certificate or copy of adoption documents
  • Change in your marital status:
    • Recent marriage: copy of marriage certificate
    • Recent divorce: copy of divorce decree
  • Loss of other insurance coverage: Copy of COBRA letter, letter from old insurance stating the last day of coverage, OR letter from employer stating the last day of insurance coverage. These requirements apply to you and your dependents.
  • Gain of other insurance coverage: Letter from new insurance stating first day of coverage, OR letter from employer stating first day of coverage. These requirements apply to you and your dependents.

You will have the opportunity to upload the documents in MyDay when you are submitting the event, instructions will be provided below.


Follow the below instructions to Initiate Benefits Change due to a qualifying life event and provide your supporting documentation. The Benefits Department will review your request. Once approved, you will receive a notification via email from MyDay and a new event in your MyDay inbox to complete the subsequent instructions to enroll, cancel or change your and/or your dependent's insurance coverage.

Initiate Benefits Change

  1. Click the Global Navigation Menu icon in the top left corner.

  2. Click the Benefits app.

  3. Select Benefits in the Change column​.blob
  4. You will be brought to the Change Reason screen. Read the instructions toward the right carefully!Benefits-Workday_2_.png
  5. Select the Change Reason (life event) which applies to you from the menu:
    1. Birth/Adoption of a Child: To enroll your newborn or due to recent adoption of a child
    2. Loss/Gain of Other Coverage: To CANCEL your and/or your dependent’s coverage, or to ENROLL yourself and/or your dependent due to your/their recent loss of other coverage
    3. Marital Status Change - Divorce/Legal Separation/Termination of Domestic Partnership: To cancel your ex-spouse or ex-domestic partner’s coverage
    4. Marital Status Change - Married/New Domestic Partner: To enroll your spouse or domestic partner due to recent marriage or new domestic partnershipBenefits-Workday_3_.png
  6. Enter the Benefit Event Date.

  7. Upload a copy of the supporting documents in the Attachments section (e.g. birth certificate, adoption documents, marriage certificate, divorce decree, COBRA letter, etc.) and click Submit.

Complete the Enrollment/Change/Cancellation Event

  1. From the home page, click the Inbox icon to the top right of the screen.

  2. Select the Benefit Change inbox item.

  3. Click Let’s Get Started to continue. You will see all the benefits available to you and your family on the next screen.

  4. Click Manage or Enroll on each designated box to newly enroll/cancel or make changes to the respective benefits. Make sure to scroll down the page to view all benefits.

Enroll Yourself/Dependent(s) to Medical and/or Dental Plans

  1. Click on the benefit that you are interested in (e.g. medical, dental). Next, select the plan you wish to enroll in and then click on Confirm and Continue at the bottom left of the screen.

  2. Click Add New Dependent and follow the instructions. You can also scroll down under Add New Dependent and you will see all the dependents that you entered into the system.

  3. You will be brought to the Add My Dependent From Enrollment screen where you can "Use an Existing Beneficiary or Emergency Contact" or "Create a Dependent." There is also a checkbox to "Use as Beneficiary," which you can select if applicable. Click OK.

  4. Add your dependent's personal information and click Save.

Remove a Dependent from Medical and/or Dental Plans

  1. Click on the benefit that you are interested in (e.g. medical, dental). Once in the plan, choose the medical or dental plan you wish to change and then click on Confirm and Continue.

  2. Uncheck the blue box next to the dependents’ name and click Save.

  3. You will receive a message that your changes have been updated but not submitted. Click Review and Sign at the bottom of the page to continue.

  4. On the final screen, you will see an overview of your benefits with the total cost per paycheck. Scroll to the bottom of the page, check the I Accept box then click Submit.View-Summary-Workday_1_.png

Congratulations! You have successfully submitted your change in benefits. You may click on View Benefits Statement to print and save as confirmation
