Information Technology (IT) Overview

What We Do

The Information Technology (IT) team is committed to providing you with a technology environment and services that supports and enhances the teaching, learning, and administrative needs of the university community. We are guided by several dominant principles:

The IT department consists of Academic Technology, Customer Experience, Enterprise Product Management, Business Intelligence and Analytics, Enterprise Infrastructure, Project and Portfolio Management & Business Analysis, and the Innovation Center.


Academic Technology

what we do

Academic Technology provides tech support to students, faculty, and staff and maintains advanced digital classrooms utilizing the latest audio and video technology and full software application suites from vendors such as Adobe, Microsoft, and Avid. Academic Technology & Customer Experience also provides a number of highly specialized technology classrooms across campus.

Learning Spaces

Learning Space Operations provides first-level support for the technology in the public labs and classrooms. You can find the Lab hours at Lab Hours. The lab locations can be found at Lab Locations. The services provided by Learning Spaces can be found on the Technology Lab and Printing page.
The Collaborative Technology team provides third-level technical support for instructional spaces as well as maintains, designs, and updates the equipment and the software used in these locations throughout campus.

The Equipment Center (EQC)

The Equipment Center at Arnhold Hall provides faculty and all credit or degree-seeking students with photography, video, audio, and lighting equipment. Students and faculty can rent equipment by walk-in checkout without a reservation for up to 48 hours, or make a reservation online for up to 4 days via MyNewSchool. CONTACT: eqc@newschool.edu

Events IT

Events IT provides equipment and technical assistance to faculty and administrators presenting media in classrooms, conferences, and meetings, and technical support for staging events in auditoriums and other event spaces. CONTACT: eventsit@newschool.edu


Customer Experience

what we do

IT Central

IT Central is the University’s Information Technology Service Desk. They are the IT forefront providing technical support via the ticketing system, phone, and in the classroom or office (please visit the IT website for hours of operation). Service requests are received and resolved on the spot or are escalated to our level 2 or level 3 support. Requests range from creating an account for a service to reporting an issue with technology. Business Intelligence and Analytics

WHAT WE DO

Business Intelligence

Our BI team develops custom BI solutions and reporting via The New School's Business Intelligence platform (Tableau). For new report requests, please submit an IT Service Request.

Data Management/Data Warehousing

Our Data Management team is responsible for the University's data lake and data warehouse. Data Lake and Data Warehouse requests should be submitted via the IT Project Request Form


Enterprise Product Management

WHAT WE DO

The Enterprise Product Management group oversees core systems that serve the university community. We partner with our constituents in the selection, development, and implementation of enterprise software applications and services. The applications we support are vast and have a wide range of uses, such as Banner student information system, Workday HR and Finance systems, Salesforce, University Chatbot, and myriad others.

Enterprise Infrastructure

WHAT WE DO

The Enterprise Infrastructure team handles many of the behind-the-scenes aspects of Information Technology at the New School. We are responsible for the technical infrastructure, security, and maintaining and developing online tools such as MyNewSchool and the university catalog.

Enterprise Systems

Maintains servers and storage and manages applications and services supporting critical aspects of our technical infrastructure.

Integrated Communications

Supports the university’s communication networks, from the network wall jack a lab computer connects to, the wireless system for our mobile devices, to the phones used throughout campus.

Information Security

Works to maintain the safety of our data, develops policy and guidance to protect our technical assets, and looks to increase awareness of information security at our institution. More information can be found on Information Security & Privacy Office (ISPO)

Physical Security

Partners with Campus Safety to maintain the technical systems that allow access to buildings and rooms and the cameras that help ensure safety around campus.

Web Development

Enhances and maintains existing online applications such as MyNewSchool, while developing new applications to meet the evolving online needs of our university.


Project and Portfolio Management and Business Analysis

WHAT WE DO

Project Management and Business Analysis

The IT Project Portfolio Management Office (PPMO) oversees project governance by providing a structure for aligning IT strategy with business strategy. By following a set framework of processes and workflow we can produce measurable results toward achieving project goals. We aim to ensure that each request aligns with The New School’s overarching objectives, as well as our IT ecosystem. We take steps to fully understand the business and stakeholder needs while taking into account data security and privacy, resources, and budget needed to implement and support the initiative, as well as the impact on our community. Innovation Center

WHAT WE DO

The Innovation Center’s mission is to create a culture of innovation that promotes a transdisciplinary intellectual and creative practice and a launchpad for new ventures with frontier technologies like Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence(AI), and Extended Reality (XR). Through programs anchored in design, social research, performing arts, and technology we empower entrepreneurial efforts to create new solutions and make a positive impact in the world.

The Center creates an innovation ecosystem that brings together faculty, students, industry and corporate partners, startups, cultural organizations, and policymakers to develop prototypes, applications, exhibitions, and performances. We encourage purposeful exploration and collaboration through academic programs, design jams and hackathons, public events, and publications. We explore the convergence of technologies, user-centric design, and ethical considerations to create insights, future narratives and deliver products and experiences.
