External Tuition Benefit for Full-time Faculty

The New School offers a benefit to its full-time faculty to support educational expenses for their dependent children. Under the provisions of this benefit, full-time faculty members can be reimbursed for up-to $2,500 per academic year for each dependent child enrolled in a tuition-charging primary or secondary school or full-time undergraduate college or university program at an institution other than The New School.

Eligible Costs

This benefit applies for tuition only, and not for other types of expenses related to dependent children’s education, such as room and board, books and materials, transportation, tutoring, or childcare.

Maximum Benefit

The maximum amount a faculty member can receive in any given year is $2,500 for each dependent child enrolled in an eligible educational institution. If the net amount of tuition paid is less than $2,500 because of financial aid received from the institution, the faculty member faculty member is entitled to receive only the actual net amount paid.

Payment of Benefit

Payment of this benefit is made by reimbursement to the faculty member. The New School does not make payments directly to educational institutions.

Tax Implications

Under applicable tax code, this benefit is counted as gross taxable income. Taxes are deducted from the total amount of the benefit paid to the faculty member as they are for a salary payment.

How to Request Reimbursement

To request reimbursement under this benefit, faculty members must submit to the divisional dean’s office receipts and/or related documentation verifying the amount of tuition paid. Faculty members will receive reimbursement in the same method as they receive their pay (e.g., in most cases, via direct deposit), usually within two pay periods following submission of receipts.

Questions?

Questions about this policy should be discussed first with the dean’s office. If necessary, the dean’s office will discuss unresolved questions with the provost’s office.

Revised: November 2013
The policy will be reviewed regularly and may be subject to change or termination of the benefit either written or not written, with or without notice, at the discretion of the University.
