Faculty 1-2-3 Step Approach for Student Support

What do I do if a student needs help?

As teachers, we strive to equip students with tools to be successful in their classrooms and beyond. The First Year Team is dedicated to supporting our faculty in their teaching – with workshops, office hours, resources and conversations. And when the scope of a student’s needs expand beyond the faculty role, your students have access to support systems in the college and university.

Reminder: If you have a student in urgent medical distress or you believe a student is in immediate danger, please call 911.

Level 1: Pedagogical and Academic Support & Approaches

Contact Your Coordinator

Faculty are not alone. Your Course Coordinator is your first point of contact and connection to a network of support. Reach out with questions related to teaching and learning, including inclusive and supportive pedagogy. It is helpful to talk out scenarios as they are unfolding. If you are wondering how to grade (Grading is an academic issue, Advising cannot provide grading advice!), how to design a new teaching approach for an individual student, or how to improve the class dynamic, your Course Coordinator is your best resource.

Level 2: University Resources & Community Care

  • Please frame your comments in the starfish flag as if you are speaking WITH the student – NOT about the student. Think of the flag as an email directly for the student that is productive and visible to Advisors and other staff who can support the student.
  • Depending on the type of flag raised, different departments will engage to assist the student. The flags elevate more emergent needs first.
  • When faculty raise a flag, Advisors and relevant offices track those flags over time. Faculty will likely not hear back with a response - but the flag is still a vital tool! It activates relevant people and offices to do outreach and provide support, and it tracks trends across courses.

If you feel that a student concern needs to be addressed further- you may reach out to your Course Coordinator to discuss the scenario.

When to Seek Immediate Help

For an elevated concern regarding a student’s well-being and safety, directly reach out to Student Support, looping in your Course Coordinator and the Director or Associate Director of First Year.

If, during your classes you do observe any concerning behaviors for any student, there are a couple ways you can assist in providing the student some more immediate support if they are in crisis:

Walk the student to Student Health Services at 80 5th Ave, 3rd floor. SHS is open Monday - Thursday 9am-5pm and Friday 10am - 5pm, closed daily at 12-1pm. You might be able to call ahead at 212.229.1671

Email studentsupport@newschool.edu, who has staff onsite Monday - Friday, and may be able to assist with in-person support.
