Audit Registration Policy

Policy Number: 04.0008

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to define who is eligible to audit coursework at The New School and how that coursework is charged and counts towards enrollment.

Scope

This policy applies to all New School students.

Definitions

N/A

Responsibilities

Registrar: Policy owner, responsible for system set up to permit auditing.

Student Success/Academic Advisors: responsible for ensuring students are aware of policy and its guidance.

Policy

Undergraduate degree-seeking students and non-matriculated students are not permitted to audit coursework.

Degree-seeking graduate students are permitted to audit up to one course per semester in support of their degree learning with the approval of their advisor or program director. Students may only register for courses that are offered at the audit level. Audit registration follows the registration schedule and must be completed by the end of the add/drop period. Please note that courses in the College of Performing Arts are not open for auditing. Courses in Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts are not open for auditing with the exception of foreign language courses.

Audit registration in a course entitles a student to attend class but not to receive evaluations, a standard letter or pass/fail grade, or to earn course credit at the culmination of the term. Once registered to audit, auditors attend the course with both rights and responsibilities of a registered student.

Credits associated with audited courses count toward students’ total registration and will be used in defining enrollment status (full-time, part-time, etc.).

**Audited courses do not count toward full time enrollment for F-1 or J-1 international students to maintain their immigration status.

There is a fee for auditing a course, as indicated in the Tuition and Fee Schedule, with the exception of language courses. If graduate students are registered in maintenance of status or other credit bearing courses, they may audit one language course per semester free of charge. Students should consult with their advisor to obtain a fee waiver.

Procedure

Courses that are available for audit must be set up within Banner with the audit level and audit grade mode attached.

Upon approval to audit, students must register for the course through Self-Service Registration within the appropriate registration dates. The student’s advisor must submit the Coding Transaction Form to have the level/grade mode updated to reflect the audit status and coordinate with Student Accounts to have any applicable fee waivers applied.
