Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Agreement

Bring your own device (BYOD) Agreement.png

As students reach the higher years at DBIS, the School recognises that a laptop may be the preferred device for student schoolwork. With this in mind, DBIS will allow students to bring in their own laptops (Chromebook, Windows Laptop or MacBook), provided that students follow and agree to the policy below. Tablet devices are not permitted.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Wireless Access

● Students will have access to the internet via the DBIS wireless network, which is filtered through PCCW’s education filter.

● Any use of the wireless network entails personal responsibility and compliance with DBIS Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).

● Access to the Discovery Bay International School wireless network is a privilege, not a right.

● IT staff will, when deemed necessary by teaching staff, conduct investigations regarding inappropriate Internet use.

Obtaining access to the network

To obtain access to the network, students will need to have their laptops checked by the IT Team and also provide the Team with the MAC address of their device. Once checked, the MAC address will be added to our network, which will enable students to access the School WiFi network from their laptop. If students are not sure how to find the MAC address, then the IT Team will help.

The network wifi password will be changed every term.

Guidelines for Use

Software Requirements

Laptops must have reliable anti-virus software installed that is acceptable to the school, and it must be kept regularly up-to-date. Examples of paid anti-virus software include McAfee, Sophos, Norton, Malwarebytes and Bitdefender. Free anti-virus software is not acceptable as it is less reliable and may contain malware.

Laptop usage:

Use of laptops

● Use of laptops during the school day is at the discretion of teachers and staff. Students must use their laptops as directed by their teacher. The primary purpose of the use of laptops at school is educational.

● The use of a student’s laptop is not to be a distraction in any way to teachers or students. The use of laptops falls under Discovery Bay International School’s Acceptable Use Policy.

● Students shall not use laptops outside of their classroom unless otherwise directed by their teacher e.g. on school visits or activities.

● Students shall make no attempts to circumvent the school’s network security and/or filtering policies.

● Students shall not distribute pictures or videos of students or staff without their permission (distribution can be as small as emailing/texting to one other person or as large as posting an image or video online).

Consequences for Misuse/Disruption (one or more may apply):

1. Access to the wireless network will be removed.

2. Device taken away for the period.

3. The device is taken away and kept in the front office until the parent picks it up. 4. Student is not allowed to use laptops at school.

5. Serious misuse of the Internet is regarded as a serious offence and will be dealt with in accordance with the Character and Culture Policy.

Liability Statement

Students bring their laptops to use at Discovery Bay International School at their own risk. Students are expected to act responsibly with regard to their own device, keeping it up to date and as secure as possible. It is their duty to be responsible for the upkeep and protection of their laptops.

Discovery Bay International School is not responsible for:

Laptops that are broken while at school or during school-sponsored activities. Laptops that are lost or stolen at school or during school-sponsored activities. Maintenance or upkeep of any device (keeping it charged, installing updates or upgrades, fixing any software or hardware issues).
