Watching Videos on Youtube in your Classroom (Purchased or Rented)

The purpose of this Guru card is to help explain the process of accessing videos in your classroom that you may want to show for educational purposes only. For entertainment purposes the FairDealingDecisionTool identifies that this is not permitted, as Youtube's licensing for rented/purchased works is intended for private use and enjoyment only.

To be able to watch a video you intend to purchase on Youtube, there are some restrictions you have to be aware of:

  1. You cannot purchase a video on Youtube using a Google Workspace for Education account. Workspace for Education accounts cannot purchase any subscriptions or licenses on Youtube. This is a Google rule (Google owns Youtube).
  2. You can purchase a video with a personal Youtube account, and you will have access to the video through that account only going forward.
  3. To watch the video in the school after you have purchased it, you may -- if nobody has previously authorized the video, you will -- need to copy the URL from the viewing link on your personal account and then access that URL from your Evergreen account on Youtube and then authorize it:
    1. Copy the URL from your personal account
    2. Log out of Youtube
    3. Log in with your Evergreen account
    4. Click the APPROVE button to the bottom right of the video
  4. Once you have completed step 3, log back into your personal account and you should now be able to watch the video.

See below for what this should look like:

When a video is blocked, a student or other unauthorized account will see this:

A staff member accessing the same video logged into their Evergreen account would see this (Note the "Video not approved for ecsrd.ca" in the bottom left, and the "APPROVE" button on the bottom right:

After approval, a student's or unauthorized viewer's view will now be:

A staff member will now see:

Note: where a video is rated "G", there is no requirement to approve the video - instead it will have a marking of "Watchable by ecsrd.ca" automatically in the bottom left. There is also no Approve/Remove button:

This does not mean the video is free. A purchase would still need to be made under a person's private account to access the video.

The information provided in this Guru card is published with the intent that the staff member has appropriately reviewed the situation they are intending to view this video in. If the intended use is not for educational purposes, and instead intended for entertainment, then permission to use the work is not granted - see the wording from the Fair Dealing Decision Tool below:image.png
