Child Care Assistance Stipend
In order to support working parents, The New School will pilot a Child Care Assistance program beginning in spring 2025. This new initiative aims to offset some of the financial burden of childcare costs, allowing parents to focus on their careers and education without compromising their children’s care. Introduced initially during contract negotiations with SENS-UAW Local 7902, which highlighted the need for child care assistance among Academic Student Workers, the program will now be available to all employees, reflecting the shared concerns of faculty and staff alike. Please find details on the program and the application form below.
Eligibility
All faculty, staff, and SENS-UAW Academic Student Workers are eligible to apply for a child care assistance stipend. To receive a stipend, you must meet the following criteria:
- Your annual income from The New School (either hourly or annually) must not exceed $75,000.
- The child(ren) in childcare must be three (3) years old or younger at the start of the 2024-25 academic year.
- The child(ren) in childcare must reside with you and/or be your legal dependents as per IRS regulations, and you must be entitled to a personal tax exemption for the child(ren).
- Your caregiver cannot be your spouse, domestic partner, or dependent.
- If both parents are employed by the university, only one parent may apply for child care stipend for your family.
Note: Your child care can be provided in a licensed family child care home, child care center, nursery school, or your own home.
How Does the Stipend Work?
Approved employees will receive a lump-sum payment to be determined for each semester, starting in the Spring 2025 semester. The stipend will be distributed through payroll (added to your paycheck) by the end of the semester, and is considered taxable income. You must reapply each semester to receive this benefit.
How to Apply
Complete the application form before the application deadline each semester. The Benefits team will reach out to you directly within two weeks if your application has been approved. The amount of your approved stipend will be shared at that time.
