Manage Federal & State/Local Withholding Elections

An employer withholds income tax from their employee’s paycheck and pays it to the IRS on their behalf. Wages paid and withheld amounts are reflected in the employee's W-2. To submit a new Form W-4, please follow the instructions in the below guide to make changes to your federal and state/local tax withholding elections.


View/Edit Federal Withholding Elections

  1. Log into MyDay. See Logging into MyDay if you need assistance.
  2. Click the Global Navigation Menu icon in the top left corner.

  3. Click the “Pay” icon.

  4. Click “Withholding Elections” in the Actions menu.

  5. You will see several tabs at the top for Federal Elections, State Elections, Local Elections and Tax Allocations. For this example, we will be editing Federal Elections. Click Update.

  6. MyDay will then ask you to select the Company and Effective Date. By default, the Company is "The New School" and the Effective Date is today’s date. An effective date is the date upon which something is considered to take effect, which may be a present or future date. This may be different from the date upon which the event actually occurs or is recorded.
    1. If these settings are correct, click OK.

  7. MyDay will allow you to view and update your W-4 Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate as necessary. Click the View Blank Form button to view the standard W-4 PDF. Review the steps and instructions carefully:
    1. Step 1: Marital Status
    2. Step 2: Multiple Jobs or Spouse Works
    3. Step 3: Claim Dependents
    4. Step 4: Other Adjustments, such as Extra Withholding and Exempt
      Please note:
      To claim exemption, please be sure to check the 'Exempt' box on the W-4 form.
    5. Step 5: Legal Notice (below)
  8. After you have made your revisions, click the "I Agree" checkbox and then OK.

View/Edit State or Local Withholding Elections

  4. Click “Withholding Elections” in the Actions menu.

  5. You will see several tabs at the top for Federal Elections, State Elections, Local Elections and Tax Allocations. For this example we will be editing State Elections, but the Local Elections editing process is the same.

  6. Click Update in the bottom left corner of the screen. Note: Your filing status will be the same for local depending on your state selection, although different allowances can be elected.

  7. A new window will open. Review/enter the required information.
    1. Company: Defaults to "The New School."
    2. Effective Date: The default is today's date. An effective date is the date upon which something is considered to take effect, which may be a present or future date. This may be different from the date upon which the event actually occurs or is recorded.
    3. State: Defaults to "New York."
    4. Withholding Form Type: Review the instructions at the top of the window to ensure you select the appropriate type. Most individuals will select "IT-2104 - Withholding."
    5. If these settings are correct, click OK.

  8. MyDay will allow you to view and update your New York IT-2104 form. Click the View Blank Form button to view the standard NY IT-2104 PDF. Complete the form where applicable for you:
    1. Marital Status
    2. Residency Information
    3. Allowances
    4. Additional Amount
  9. Once completed, click the “I Agree” checkbox and then OK.
