Building Access

All New School students, faculty, and staff must present their newcard ID for access to campus buildings. Employees are required to carry their newcard with them at all times for access into buildings, use of consortium libraries, and dining services. Visitors to the university are required to sign in and show photo identification at the security desk.

NOTE: Building access may be restricted due to current Covid-19 policies. See COVID-19 Vaccination & Testing Requirements for more information and to learn how to gain access.

Process for Gaining Building Access

Campus Safety oversees building access in coordination with several offices across campus. The following processes are in place for gaining access to buildings on campus:

for students:

When the Registrar's Office updates student status in Banner, an IT script in Oracle provisions access to academic buildings and the student's newcard can then be used to gain entry. Dorm access is provisioned by Housing & Residential Education using StarRes. Offices involved in granting access: Registrar, Housing, IT, Campus Safety

For Faculty & Staff:

Faculty & Staff are granted access to buildings once their employee status has been entered and updated by Human Resources in Workday and Banner. Once their profile is updated as staff or faculty, IT provisions access to the appropriate academic buildings, faculty resource centers, staff and faculty lounges, admin hubs, etc. and the staff or faculty member is then able to gain entry by swiping their newcard. Offices involved in granting access: Human Resources, IT, Registrar, Campus Safety

For Guests/Visitors:

Visitors to the university are required to sign in and show photo identification at the security desk for all buildings on campus.

Restricted Access

If you believe your card should give you access to a restricted access point (side entrances to some New School buildings) or if you encounter a locked door that you do not have access to (faculty lounge, office, conference room, etc.), ask your access control coordinator or supervisor to email the Campus Safety department on your behalf. Your card will automatically begin working as soon as the access is set up. If your card is not working at any access points, please contact Campus Safety at 646.909.4000 or New Card services at newcard@newschool.edu.

Requesting Access

If you need to request special access to rooms or studios, or to request special access for a group, please contact the access control coordinator for your area.

NOTE: There is a designated access control coordinator for each area across the university. Access control coordinators change throughout the year. If you are unsure of who is the designated access control coordinator for your area, contact your manager or department head.
