How to Submit a Writer Application (Performing Rights Only)

Before You Start

Log in to the SOCAN Member Portal
Have your personal, banking, and tax information ready
You can review and edit your application before submitting


Step 1 — Access My Applications

  1. Log in to the SOCAN Member Portal
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the homepage
  3. Locate My Applications (above My Cases and below Cue Sheets)

Step 2 — Create a New Application

  1. Click + Create New Application (top right of the My Applications section)
  2. Select Writer Application

Step 3 — Select Member Rights Type

  1. Under Member Rights Type, select:
    • Performing Rights (PR) only
  2. Click Next

Step 4 — Enter Personal Information

  1. Complete the Personal Information section:
    • Full name
    • Date of birth

Step 5 — Enter Address & Contact Details

  1. Complete the Address and Contact Details section
  2. Ensure all mandatory fields (*) are filled in

Step 6 — Communication Preferences

  1. In Communication Information:
    • Select your preferred Language (English or French)
    • Select How did you hear about us?

Step 7 — Accept Terms & Conditions

  1. At the bottom of the page, select Yes to agree to SOCAN’s Terms and Conditions of Membership
  2. Click Next

Step 8 — Select U.S. Society of Affiliation

  1. Choose one of the following:
    • ASCAP
    • BMI
    • SESAC
  2. Click Next

Step 9 — Tax Information

  1. Enter the required SIN/SNN
  2. Select your Country of Residence for Tax Purposes

Step 10 — Banking Information

  1. Select Bank Account Location:
    • Canadian bank account
    • U.S. bank account
    • Outside Canada and the U.S.
  2. Complete all mandatory banking fields (*)

Step 11 — Review & Submit

  1. Review all details on the Application Review page
  2. If changes are needed, click Previous to edit
  3. When ready, click Submit

What Happens Next?

Once submitted, your application will be reviewed by SOCAN. You may be contacted if additional information is required. You can check the status of your application directly in the member portal.
