Buildings & Campus Operations Overview

We plan, build, manage and service the university’s facilities to create and maintain the best possible learning and work environments with available funds and staff, in keeping with the university’s goals for sustainable practices. We work with all university constituencies to respond to facilities needs and we provide a broad range of assistance with building-related matters.


Who We Are

We are experienced building professionals – space planners, engineers, architects, buildings managers, health and safety specialists, maintenance and cleaning staff. We are a service organization, dedicated to supporting the university’s academic mission, to enhancing and safeguarding its building assets.

Capital Infrastructure

What We Do

Capital Infrastructure analyzes the scope, feasibility and cost of all capital construction needs.


Design & Construction

What We do

The Design & Construction team supervises and carries out design and construction work, retains consultants and contractors, implements infrastructure upgrades and ensure compliance and regulatory approvals.


Facilities Management

The New School Facilities Management is responsible for maintaining and operating the buildings on campus. Facilities Management is dedicated to excellent customer service in all aspects of its operations. We invite feedback and suggestions from all members of the university community that will help us make the New School campus beautiful, safe, and sustainable.

Maintenance and Housekeeping

Maintenance and Housekeeping is responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of campus buildings and dorms, and responds to work orders submitted through the online work order system including room and event set-up within buildings.

Environmental Health and Safety

The New School's Environmental Health and Safety office within Facilities Management is responsible for regulatory compliance for worker safety and environmental protection. The office's responsibilities include chemical safety, EPA-regulated waste management practices, ergonomic guidelines, and safety awareness campaigns.

Sustainability

The New School is committed to sustainability in all aspects of building operations, especially reduction of water and energy consumption and increased efforts in recycling and composting solid waste. Our architects, engineers, and facility staff are addressing climate change in a variety of ways — working with the university’s vast talent pool and the Tishman Center on key initiatives to develop ways to reduce our footprint and carry the mission of global environmental responsibility beyond NYC. Mail & Package Services

Mail & Packages Services oversees all digital mail, outgoing mail and packages for the university and manages the new package receipt and retrieval service, Package Concierge. Campus Venue Services

what we do

Campus Venue Services provides assistance for campus co-sponsored events, assists the university community with the coordination of non-instructional events and activities in accordance with the university's protocols on facilities use, and manages procedures for Venue Leasing. The team manages venue reservation requests in 25Live, campus dining, and business aspects of event logistics.

Fire & Safety

what we do

The Fire & Campus Safety team interacts with all university departments as well as external organizations including the NYPD, FDNY, EMS and Federal authorities to ensure the safety and protection of the campus community. The team is responsible for all aspects of fire safety and emergency response management and protocols, access control, locksmith work orders and coordination, safety training, and campus crime investigations and reports. Space Planning

what we do

Space planning engages in strategic planning for short-term space needs and long-term campus development. We manage requests for space assignments, moves, furniture and equipment and maintain updated plans and space-related data for all buildings. See also Space Planning Overview.
