Temporary/Miscellaneous Employees (Temp/Misc.)
NOTE: All proposed Temp/Misc. engagements must be reviewed and approved BEFORE engaging the individual, to ensure proper classification and payment. Please plan accordingly, as the onboarding can take 3-4 weeks.
What is a Temporary/Miscellaneous Employee?
A temporary employee is a contracted worker hired for a short-term job.
Temp/Misc Process
Miscellaneous/Temporary employees cannot legally engage in any work or receive compensation until this form is completed and they have been onboarded with HR. Please plan accordingly, as the onboarding can take 3-4 weeks. Please make a copy and use The New School Job Description Template to describe the role, as we will need to send this to HR for approval. This is required. HR will need the job description to approve the position.
NOTE:
- Misc/temp employees cannot be students.
- Faculty cannot hire former students as misc/temp employees to continue work under the Research Assistant, or any of the SENS-UAW classifications.
- All misc/temp positions include a 10% fringe paid from the same budget.
Can students who are graduating continue to work?
Graduating students can continue in their student positions until the end of the month in which they graduate. Students who will continue to work need to be transferred from their student positions (including federal work-study) to temporary positions by the first of the following month (for example, a student who graduates on May 14 can work until May 31 and be transferred to a temporary position as of June 1). If this is the case, complete the form below 3-4 weeks before the Spring semester ends.
International students on F-1 or J-1 immigration status whose immigration records are held by the New School: If you are graduating in the current semester, your on-campus employment must end on the last day of the month in which you complete your final program requirement.
