Part-time Faculty Remedies and Fees

Part-time Faculty may be eligible for a financial remedy or fee, per the Part-Time Faculty - ACT-UAW Local 7902 Collective Bargaining Agreement, in the event that the University fails to meet their baseload, or cancels a course post-appointment letter. Details of the types of remedies and fees, eligibility and the timeline for payment are outlined below.

Unmet Baseload Remedies

Overview and ElIgibility

When the University does not meet a Part-time Faculty member's baseload, they may be eligible for a one-time unmet baseload remedy on the number of contact hours that are unmet. Probationary and Post-Probationary faculty, who do not have baseloads, are not eligible for these remedies. For faculty with baseloads, the percentage is outlined below:

Probationary and

Post-Probationary

Not eligible

Annual

30% of wages per course

Grandparented and Multi-Year

50% of wages per course

Note: Unmet baseload remedies for faculty whose baseload is made up exclusively of non-credit courses shall be 75% of the equivalent base load reduction fees for Faculty with credit and mixed (credit and non credit) baseloads.

Timeline

For standard Fall/Spring baseloads, the University has the academic year plus the following summer semester to try and meet a faculty member's unmet baseload via the course lookaround process. If the University is not able to meet a faculty member's baseload and they are eligible for a remedy, they can expect to receive a remedy after the completion of the summer semester, typically in September. Faculty can refer to the 2026 Biweekly Pay Schedule for Part-Time Faculty and Teaching Staff or reach out to payrollhelp@newschool.edu for any questions about their remedy dispersement.

Course Cancellation Fees

Overview and ElIgibility

If a course is cancelled by the University after the receipt of an appointment letter in MyDay (see: View Acknowledged Appointment Letters in MyDay), and there is no replacement course available, the faculty member is entitled to a cancellation fee which is determined by their Part-time Faculty status, as outlined in the chart below:

Probationary and

Post-Probationary

15% of wages per course

Annual

30% of wages per course

Grandparented and Multi-Year

50% of wages per course

Timeline

Each semester, courses that have been cancelled by the University are reviewed and faculty who are eligible to receive a cancellation fee are identified. Cancellation fees are paid out roughly in the middle of the semester (ie., October in Fall; March in Spring; July in Summer). Faculty can refer to the 2026 Biweekly Pay Schedule for Part-Time Faculty and Teaching Staff or reach out to payrollhelp@newschool.edu for any questions about their cancellation fee dispersement.

Note: Unmet baseload remedies and course cancellation fees do not apply when the reduction or cancellation is due to severance or has been requested by the Faculty member.
