How to Register a Song or Work in the Member Portal
Before You Start
Log in to the SOCAN Member Portal
Have contributor and share information ready
You can save your registration as a draft and submit it later
Step 1 — Access Work Registration
- Go to Works
- Select Register New Work
Step 2 — Enter Work Details
Complete the required fields:
- Original Title
- Language
- Duration
Optional fields:
- Genre
- Instrumentation (e.g., band, orchestra, choir)
Genre is optional and does not affect registration.
You can review the Helpful Tips area for additional assistance.
Step 3 — Add Alternate Titles (If Applicable)
- Add alternate titles if the work is known by another name
- Do not add remixes or alternate versions here
Step 4 — Add Work Numbers (Optional but Recommended)
If applicable, enter work identifiers such as:
- ISRC (for previously released tracks)
Adding identifiers helps SOCAN accurately identify your work for payment.
Step 5 — Select Work Type
Select the option that best describes your work:
- Original work
- Arrangement
- Library music
- Commission for TV, film, or commercial (cue)
Be sure to 'unselect' Original work in order to select Arrangement
Click Next to continue.
Step 6 — Add Contributor Details
- The account you are viewing will appear by default as a contributor
- Click Add New to add additional contributors
- Use the three dots to search by member name or IPI number
- Search using IPI Number, Account Number or Contributor Name. You can also narrow your search by Publisher or Music Creator. Select the contributor,
Step 7 — Enter Contributor Shares
- Enter both Performance and Mechanical shares
- Ensure total shares equal 100%
Important notes:
- If no publisher is involved, performance and mechanical shares are usually the same
- If the work is published, assign 100% of the mechanical share to the publisher
- If you are still unsure, simply do not enter the mechanical share
- The U.S. licensing society will auto-populate based on SOCAN records

Step 8 — Upload Attachments (Optional)
You may upload supporting documents, such as:
- Proof of clearance for samples
ℹ Audio files are not required. Please do not try to upload them.
Click Next to continue.
Step 9 — Add Additional Details (Optional)
Add optional details such as:
- Performing artist
Click Next when finished.
Step 10 — Review & Submit
- Review all entered information carefully
- Choose one option:
- Confirm & Submit Registration
- Save Registration (to return later)
Step 11 — Track Your Registration
- Draft works appear under View My Draft Works
- Submitted drafts show a status of Draft Submitted
- Once reviewed and approved, works appear under View My Registered Works
