Student Disciplinary Council | SCE

About

For the past half decade, Parsons SCE’s Student Council has been an integral agent in shaping the studio environment and culture of the School of Constructed Environments. In addition to co-writing and ratifying the Studio Etiquette Policy, which can be found in every SCE syllabus and has been critical for our NAAB reaccreditation of the Master of Architecture program, SCE’s Student Council contributes every year to our end of year show of work by graduating students, and has supported important student-led sustainability initiatives such as the Trash Talk material recycling program. From year to year, the council has worked closely with SCE faculty leadership and passed along its protocols and agenda to the next year’s student leaders.

Based on feedback from student leadership and input from SCE’s Leadership Council, the SCE Student Council was restructured in Fall 2017 to better promote and sustain interest among SCE’s students across the full school year. Growing interest in and formation of disciplinary-centered student “clubs” in Parsons SCE – in architecture, interior design, lighting and product/industrial design – have galvanized around such activities as sketching, site visits, guest lectures, workshops, and skills exchanges. Disciplinary clubs are also able and interested to develop relations with respective professional entities (AIA, IDSA, ASID, IES) to promote awareness of professional pathways, internships and grant/funding/award opportunities.

Consequently, in Fall 2017 SCE adopted the structure of Student Disciplinary Councils (SDC), mirroring the full time faculty Disciplinary Councils, established in SCE in Fall 2016. Except where noted (Interior Design & Lighting), each of the 4 SCE disciplines (Architecture, Interior Design, Lighting Design, Product/Industrial Design) will have two representatives, ensuring that all programs (graduate and undergraduate) are represented. For the present, the Dual Degrees and Double Majors will be represented through the SDC's, though that may change if it is determined that representation of these groups is not sufficient. Since Lighting is only graduate level, and there are three Interior Design programs, the representation will be:

  • Architecture Council: 2 student representatives
  • Interior Design Council: 3 student representatives
  • Lighting Council: 1 student representatives
  • Product/Industrial Council: 2 student representatives

The 8-member Student Disciplinary Council will meet with the SCE Dean and Leadership regularly (every 3-4 weeks during the fall and spring semester) to share information and ideas across the student “clubs” and shared endeavors. Shared endeavors include studio maintenance (Trash Talk material recycling) and end of year show. Leadership of the SDC will not be traditional: i.e. president, vice president, etc. Rather, the 4 disciplines will rotate in setting meeting agendas. SDC subcommittees and task forces can be structured across "clubs" for concerted energies, as needed. Leadership positions that are shared between two students are rotational: if both are present at a given meeting they represent 1 vote.
