Google Workspace
What is Google Workspace?
The New School provides access to Google services for productivity, communication, and collaboration via Google Workspace for Education, formerly known as G Suite. While signed in to Google Workspace with your New School NetID and password, you will have access to multiple Google apps, such as the below.
Note: As of May 2022, significant changes were made to Google storage limits. Contact IT Central with any questions.
Key Services
Below are some of the key Google services available through Google Workspace.
Google mail (Gmail)
Google Mail, also known as Gmail, is much more than an email tool. With the integrated Google Workspace, Gmail allows you to chat with colleagues, set tasks and reminders, start or join meetings, and connect to other Google applications all from your email. New School Email is powered by Gmail. Sign into Google Mail using your NetID and password at mail.newschool.edu.

Google Calendar
Google Calendar helps you keep track of events and schedules, easily plan meetings, and share events. You may block focus time, set your working hours and location, and even schedule tasks and reminders. Google Calendar also integrates with Zoom for seamless virtual meeting productivity. Sign into Google Calendar using your NetID and password at calendar.newschool.edu.

Google Drive
Google Drive is one of the many document management platforms available to The New School. Google Drive integrates seamlessly with other Google Workspace applications. However, we recommend reviewing our overview of File Sharing Systems before selecting a tool. Login to Google Drive anytime using your NetID and password at drive.google.com.
In addition to document storage, Google Drive is also where you can create new files using:
Google Application | Description | Equivalency |
Text documents | Microsoft Word, Apple TextEdit
Spreadsheets | Microsoft Excel, Apple Numbers
Presentations | Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote
Surveys | Microsoft Forms |
Google chat (Gchat) and Spaces
Formerly known as Google Hangouts, Google Chat (Gchat) is an instant messaging platform that seamlessly integrates with the Google Workspace applications. Within Google Chat, you may share files (Google Drive or local files on your computer or device), create Google Calendar invites, and begin Google Meet meetings.
NOTE: While some individuals may have legacy access to the Zoom Hangouts Chat application, also known as the Zoom Bot, this is not currently offered or supported by IT.
Google Spaces are similar to Slack "channels" within Google Chat. Within Spaces, conversations are threaded based on topic so that you may easily ask questions or reference materials related to a project, committee, or topic. See a comparison of group chats versus spaces. Google Chat and Spaces are available directly within Google Mail or you may install the Google Chat app on your computer.

Google Meet
Google's meeting and web conferencing tool is Google Meet. Google Meet is a fast alternative for scheduling impromptu meetings with your colleagues (we love it as an alternative to phone calls when you keep your camera off!). Google Meet and Zoom are pretty similar, but we recommend leveraging Zoom for large meetings or anytime you need advanced features such as whiteboarding or polls. As described above, Google Meet is available directly from Gmail or by visiting meet.google.com/ (login using your NetID and password).
