Generating Your Price Transparency MRF from GoRev

Hospitals as of January 1st, 2021 were required to produce a price transparency machine readable file (MRF) and publicly display it on their website. This guide shows you how to generate and publish your Price Transparency MRF directly from GoRev.

This guide will walk you through how to use the MRF generator built into GoRev to produce your Price Transparency MRF files.

Important: You must utilize line item posting if you are out of network in order for the estimated column to be generated into your MRF files.

Configure which Carriers should be included in your MRF

Navigate to Insurance Carrier Management

By default, all carriers are included in the MRF. If you do not want a carrier included, open the Claim Generation tab and check the box labeled Exclude from Transparency MRF. Changes here apply to all future MRF reports generated.

Make sure your contracts are loaded

Price transparency publication requirements state you must produce all contracted rates into your MRF. GoRev can facilitate this only if you have configured your contracts into our GoRev Contract Management module.

IMPORTANT:
If no contracted rate is loaded for a specific carrier the GoRev MRF generator utilizes the previous 365 days of claims for each carrier to calculate the estimated allowed per code. You will know it has done this when the additional_generic_notes field in the MRF is populated with "OON Rate based upon average line item remittance prior 365 days"

Create your header file

You will need to create a header file based on the specifications shown below. We have included a spreadsheet with the headers you can start from.

Transparency File MRF headers.csv

Open the provided CSV template. In row 2, complete all required fields. You can use Excel or a plain text editor such as Notepad++. Save the file as a CSV once completed.

Details regarding the header portion requirements can be found here: https://github.com/CMSgov/hospital-price-transparency/tree/master/documentation/CSV#general-data-elements

Screenshot below is as of 08/20/2025

Once you create this header file keep it on hand as you will simply update the last_updated_on column and paste in the new MRF content generated out of GoRev each time you need to update your data.

Generate your MRF data and add to your header file

Navigate to Reports and run the Price Transparency MRF Generator report shown below.

Note: This report can generate hundreds of thousands of rows depending on how many Carriers you have included as it generates one row per charge master item per carrier included. This means it can take up to several minutes to generate.

Export your MRF data to a CSV by clicking Export and then Export as CSV

After exporting your GoRev MRF report, open the file in a text editor such as Notepad++, copy the data, and paste the data beneath your completed header row in the header CSV file. Save the file as your hospital’s official Price Transparency MRF.

Select all of the data and copy.

Open your headers csv file and paste this data into line 3

The end result should be your completed MRF file containing two sets of headers as seen below.

Publish Your File

Upload your finalized CSV file to your hospital’s public website in a clearly labeled location (commonly under a ‘Price Transparency’ page). CMS requires this file be directly accessible without login or barriers.
