About the College

As of Fall 2026, Parsons and Performing Arts operate as one integrated college, Parsons, Mannes, Jazz, and Drama. Each of the four schools — Parsons School of Design, Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the School of Drama — keeps its name, its brand, and the global reputation it has built over decades.

Our mission and identity

Grounded in The New School's commitment to intellectual freedom, creativity, and social engagement, our college brings together one of the world's leading art and design schools and three world-class conservatories. Students come to us to master their craft, develop their creative voice, and build a critical point of view. Our faculty of working practitioners and scholars bring contemporary professional practice into the classroom, studio, and rehearsal room. New York City is part of the curriculum, connecting students to the industries and communities they are preparing to shape.

The integration preserves the rigor and disciplinary depth of each school while expanding the space where students and faculty across design, art, business, music, and performance can learn, create, and work together.

Replace duplicated or siloed systems with coordinated, shared administrative support.
Build a structure that can adapt to changes in enrollment and emerging fields.

How the college is organized

Our faculty and educational offerings are primarily organized into three Faculty Areas, grouped by shared methods of creative practice, research, and teaching.

Faculty of Arts: artistic and creative practice through making, performance, visual expression, and media

Comprises Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, the School of Drama, and Parsons' Visual & Media Arts programs

Faculty of Systems & Cultures: research, strategy, and systems thinking as ways to understand and change society

Comprises Parsons' Art & Design History and Theory and Design Strategies programs

Faculty of Design: design as inquiry and transformation across the materials, spatial, and ecological world

Comprises Parsons' Constructed Environments and Fashion Design programs

Faculty Areas serve as academic homes for faculty expertise, scholarship, and governance. They are not student- or external-facing brands; students continue to experience the college through their degree programs under the Parsons, Mannes, Jazz, and Drama names.

In addition to the three Faculty Areas, our college has a suite of cross-college offerings, including:

Pre-college programs including Parsons Scholar Program and Mannes Prep.
Parsons' First Year program, the foundational undergraduate curriculum for Parsons School of Design.
Continuing and Professional Education including adult education offerings.

Your Academic & Faculty Identity

While the integration brought us from two colleges with eight schools to one integrated college, your academic home has not changed. You remain a valuable member of the specific school (Parsons, Mannes, Jazz, or Drama) and program in which you teach. Organizational Structure

Note: The new organizational structure is not yet final. This section will be updated as information becomes available.

To students and the external world, we will primarily be known by our four school brand names. Our administrative structure and internal organization will shift to the new three-faculty area model over the course of the 2026-27 academic year.

In Fall 2026, new academic leadership appointments will be made throughout the three new faculty areas. These individuals will lead the faculty, staff, and programs/educational offerings of each faculty as a whole, as well as oversee the transition together with faculty and staff colleagues. These positions are intended to provide distributed support and free up bottlenecks often experienced in our previous structure. See a full list of leadership in the Academic Departments dropdown.
Faculty will be placed in the college by their position, which will predominantly follow their former school’s new home. More information on this process and timing will be forthcoming from your local faculty area leadership.
In Spring 2027, we will look to transition our administrative framework to the new three faculty area integrated model. For now, we will continue to operate in our former administrative structures while we develop a new administrative framework.
