Audience: Jobseekers

Have you ever been in a situation where you couldn't confidently answer a technical question by an IT Recruiter ?
Did your face go blank ?
Did you wish you prepared better ?

Here is what you should do in these situations: Use BTM.

BTM is a 1 paragraph essay you would explain to a IT Recruiter to improve your confidence. BTM contains three sections: Business Technical and Management

Business: Explain the business use case of the project where you used the skill. Explain and quantify business numbers, financials, and significance of the project for the client. Explain your role in the Project.

Technical: Explain the technical terms, try not be too technical. The goal of this section is to sound technically strong to the IT Recruiter. Explain technical scenarios. Explain how stressful the days were to meet the deadlines.

Management: This sections is all about your team structure, explain your team size, explain SDLC process followed by the team, explain how you collaborated with the leadership

Remember, IT Recruiters are not the people who actually work in an IT Project. IT Recruiters are just head hunters who try to find confident and suitable candidates for their clients. VS Principle 2: Life of an IT Recruiter .Thus, taking a developer's tone, and explaining a lot of deep tech skills is a bad practice. A BTM answer will contain a lot things that are easily understood, and digestible by IT Recruiters. A BTM is digestible by IT Recruiters because:

  • Its a story

  • It starts with explaining a business use case, which is a normal language for anyone to understand.

  • It ends with Management information, which is again a normal language, and it will conclude the answer well.

  • Technical skills are always mentioned in the middle section, because human phycology only focus's on how an answer starts, and how an answer ends.

Example: Ravi has minimal knowledge on ServiceNow. On the other hand Ravi does have experience in Salesforce which is completely different from ServiceNow. Along with Salesforce knowledge, Ravi also has the ServiceNow Specialization sheet ServiceNow Specializations. Pramod, an IT Recruiter from IDC Technologies asks the below question to Ravi

Pramod: "Ravi, one of the skills that are heavily needed for this role is ServiceNow ITOM. Could you explain your experience on ITOM ?"

Ravi's strategy: Ravi knows that Pramod is just a IT Recruiter who is trying to find candidates for many roles on his list. Ravi knows that Pramod is not a ServiceNow expert. Ravi also knows that if he can sound like a ServiceNow expert, Pramod will be convinced. Thus Ravi would explain use cases of Salesforce, something that he knows well, along with some keywords for ITOM grabbed from ServiceNow Specializations, as if he is explaining the ServiceNow use case.

Ravi: "Pramod, I was recently in a project with one of the pharmaceuticals manufacturing company. Our project was all about how efficiently we manage the IT Operations in the company. This was a 8 Million dollar project, where I designed the process flow that helped more than 10,000 pharmacists. I used ITOM modules like CMDB, Discovery, Event Management and Service Mapping to properly deliver the ITOM functionality. My team was small, and i worked in Kanban frame work. and I often solved all the production issues as i was the only subject matter expert on the team"

Lets analyze Ravi's Answer:

B (Business):
I was recently in a project with one of the pharmaceuticals manufacturing company. Our project was all about how efficiently we manage the IT Operations in the company. This was a 8 Million dollar project, where I designed the process flow that helped more than 10,000 pharmacists. [This project is Salesforce Project, presented as ServiceNow project]

T (Technical): I used ITOM modules like CMDB, Discovery, Event Management and Service Mapping to properly deliver the ITOM functionality. [These concepts are ServiceNow concepts, grabbed from ServiceNow Specializations]

M (Management): My team was small, and i worked in Kanban frame work. and I often solved all the production issues as I was the only subject matter expert on the team". [Ravi explains himself as dependable]
