Getting Started with Guru

If you've found this page - congratulations, you've made it to our university knowledge base! Guru is a university-wide tool for storing and managing institutional knowledge such as university policies, procedures for job-specific tasks, onboarding information, frequently asked questions, and more.

Guru may be accessed via the below methods:

  1. Web Application
  2. Browser Extension (Google Chrome browsers only)
  3. Mobile Application available from the Apple App Store (not available for Android devices at this time)
NOTE: All users must login using their New School NetID email address and password. Only staff and faculty have access to Guru at this time (no students or student workers).

Training

Below is a recording of a Guru Launch Session we held in 2023, which guides users through system navigation and provides some tips and tricks to get the most out of Guru. You may also view the 25-minute recording here.

System Navigation

Below are the key features of the Guru Web Application interface. Note that some icons and options will appear differently in the Browser Extension or on the Mobile App. Guru has some specific terminology that is used below - refer back to Guru Terminology (Glossary) if you find yourself getting lost.
Key features of the Guru interface, described below.

  1. Home (Dashboard): When you first log into Guru, you are brought to your personal Dashboard. Here you will find your recently viewed cards, your Favorites, new and popular cards, and any outstanding Tasks you may have, like replying to a comment (see below).

    Click The New School at the top of the page or Home from the left-hand panel at any time to navigate back to your Dashboard. Click the three lines in the left corner to collapse the left-side navigation panel at any time.
  2. My Library: Users may Favorite Cards and Folders similar to traditional "bookmarks," which may be organized into lists for quick access. You may also Follow a Card or an Author to be notified of changes and new content. You'll also find a listing of Recently Viewed and New Cards here.
  3. My Drafts: My Drafts is is where those with advanced permissions (Authors, Collection Owners, etc.) can view and manage their unpublished drafts.
  4. Tasks: Tasks is where you will find any new @mentions, comments, announcements, etc. Those with advanced permissions (Authors, Collection Owners, etc.) can also manage their verification pipeline in Tasks.
  5. Analytics: Data and analytics are available for each card and group of users, which is available to users with advanced permissions (Authors, Collection Owners, etc.).
  6. Card Manager: Card Manager is only available to users with advanced permissions (Authors, Collection Owners, etc.), but provides a birds-eye view of all content available to each author.
  7. Collections: Collections are the top-level navigation of the knowledge base. Select All Collections at the left to view a grid of available Collections. Users may also "pin" a Collection to the navigation panel for easy access. Continue reading Guru Organizational Structure to learn more about Collections, Folders, and Cards.
  8. Search / Ask Guru: A Search bar is available in the top, which also has filters for Collections, Tags, and Favorites. Enter a question into the search bar to leverage the power of AI - Guru will dig through the database for you and return a simple, direct answer!
  9. + / Create a Card: Create a Card is only available to users with advanced permissions (Authors, Collection Owners, etc.).
  10. Resource Center: The question mark in the bottom-right of your screen leads to the Resource Center, Guru help tools for system administrators. Please review Guru Help for assistance navigating the platform, help finding a topic, or with any questions.
