Comments & Mentions

Can I ask a question about a specific card or piece of content?

As mentioned in Guru Help, there are many ways to interact with content and its owners in Guru including Comments and @Mentions (described below).

Overview

Guru has capability for in-line Comments and @Mentions, similar to Google Docs. Commenting on a card is the ideal way to ask a question or make a comment about that specific card or piece of information. Examples include:

  • Confirming if the data cited in the card is from the most current academic year
  • Making sure that a process has been updated to reflect a new system
  • Indicating employees that may have left the university or changed roles
  • Pointing out information you know to be false, and providing the correct answer

While not every comment may require a @mention, it can often be helpful to loop in team members that you believe can provide context to missing information, or correct inaccurate information.

EX: If you are sure a team member has left a committee, but are unsure of their replacement, you can @mention a senior committee member to provide information about who may have taken their seat. If you know for certain who has taken their seat, you can simply add a comment providing the correct information for the card's author to review.

Each time a comment is added to a card, the card's Verifier is sent an email notifying them of the activity and the card becomes Unverified. If the card remains unverified for some time, you can request verification on card to send a follow-up email reminding the verifier of the task.

NOTE: Comments are always public! Please be wary of sharing any restricted or sensitive information via Comment, and consider direct outreach to the card verifier where appropriate.

View Comments

Guru does not maintain a history of comments you have posted on cards, or comments you have resolved.
However, you can see all open comments on a specific card.

Click the chat bubble in the upper-right-hand side of a card to view all current Comments on that card.

Open Comments are displayed next to the yellow highlighted text. Scroll to view comment(s). We've added a comment to this sentence, as an example. You can Reply or React to existing comments to add emphasis or context, without crowding a verifier's inbox with duplicate requests.

You can also view open comments from directly within the Guru Card Editor! When a card has open comments for your review, it will depict a red notification bubble as seen below:

We recommend scanning any Open Comments before adding a new one.

Mentions

You may tag other people in the comment by @mentioning them in your comment. Once someone has been mentioned in a comment, they will be notified of each additional post related to that comment.

  • Individuals must already have an active account within Guru to be @mentioned in a comment. You may search for the individual by name or NetID email address (not email alias).
  • You may also @mention a Group within Guru, such as @Experts (all Authors and Verifiers).

The verifier of the card and any other individuals/groups you tagged in your comment will receive an email notification and new task in their Mentions inbox.

NOTE: Verifiers are always automatically alerted when a comment is posted, and do not need to be mentioned in comments on their cards.

View Your Mentions

If you have been @mentioned in a comment, you will receive an email notification as well as a Task.

Click My Hub > Mentions to open all active comments assigned to you. Mentions are ordered by reverse chronological order with the most recent mention appearing at the top of the list. You may also sort your mentions by clicking each column title.

NOTE: Comments will continue to display in your Mentions inbox until you Dismiss the notification.

React, Reply, and Resolve Comments

If you have been @mentioned in a comment, you can take the below actions directly from your email inbox, from your Mentions (above), or by opening the card in question via the View Open Comments instructions above.
