New Hire Checklist - 1. Before Your First Day

Welcome to The New School! As a new employee, there are a number of things you will need to be prepared for your first day of work and beyond. Feel free to print this page or save as a PDF if you would like to check things off as you complete them.

The steps listed below are in chronological order. We recommend completing the below as soon as possible to avoid delays. Refer to Onboarding Help for assistance unless noted otherwise below.

1) Identify Your Login Information

Contact IT Central if you have difficulty accessing or using the below services - you may submit an IT Service Request ("ticket") online or contact IT Central.

  1. New School ID Number (N#): Once you complete your new hire paperwork, you will be sent your New School ID Number (N#) via secure send email message. Part-time faculty should get their ID# from the school/program representative with whom they initially completed new hire paperwork.
  2. NetID: Use your N# and last name to lookup your NetID, your username for all technology services at The New School.
  3. Password: You will next need to reset your password. From the Account Services portal (account.newschool.edu) select "Reset Your Password." You will be prompted to enter your NetID and answer three security questions (Date of Birth, New School ID Number, and last four digits of your Social Security Number).
    1. Tip: Your password will expire every six months. You may change your password at that time, or any time, by visiting account.newschool.edu.
  4. Email: You are required to utilize your Net School Email for all work correspondence. Visit mail.newschool.edu and log into your New School Email using your default email address (NetID@newschool.edu) and NetID password. You will need to enroll with Duo multi-factor authentication before you can use mail for the first time. Additional instructions to set up your account are provided on the New School Account Setup Guide.
    1. Reminder: Don't forget to email your HR representative from your New School Email account once you have successfully logged in, if applicable.
    2. Tip: Email is powered by Gmail at The New School - see G Suite (Google) for guides and pointers if this is your first time using Gmail.

2) Complete Onboarding Tasks in MyDay

  1. Onboarding Tasks: You will receive emails from the MyDay system letting you know that you have tasks awaiting your attention. You will need to log into the MyDay system with your NetID and password, which will direct you to the employee portal. Follow these instructions to find and complete these tasks in the system. Complete these tasks before your first day on the job, especially your Form I-9.
    1. Reminder: This is not the external version of WorkDay that you used to apply for the position, submit your references, and sign your offer letter. If you receive emails asking you to complete these tasks and you have not received a SecureSend email with your N#, contact HRCareers@newschool.edu.
  2. Benefits Election: You cannot complete your benefit elections until the first official day of your employment contract, but the notification labeled "Benefit Change" will remain in your onboarding tasks inbox on MyDay until it becomes available.

3) Upload Documentation

  1. ID Photo: Upload a photo of yourself for your newcard (New School ID) at idphoto.newschool.edu. You'll receive an email when your photo has been approved and your card is available for pickup from Card Services, located at 39 West 13 Street, 2nd Floor.

4) Attend Orientation

  1. New Faculty Orientation (full-time and part-time faculty only): New Faculty Orientation is hosted twice a year. The next orientation date will be announced at a later date coinciding with the start of the fall semester, along with the link to register for the event. When registering for the Faculty New Hire Orientation, use your name and New School email or personal email if you have not yet been issued a New School email address. Once you register, you will receive a Zoom link for the meeting that will enable you to join.
  2. Staff Orientations are held every two weeks. HR will reach out to you via email with an invitation to schedule the orientation you'd like to attend - refer to Checklist 3 for more information.
