MyDay Time Off & Leave Guide
The New School offers different options for employees to take time away from work depending on the circumstances. In MyDay, "time off" typically refers to absences that are subject to manager approval, such as vacation. "Leaves" refers to job- and benefit-protected leaves of absence that must be approved by the Benefits team in Human Resources and the university's carrier, The Standard.
NOTE: NYC Safe & Sick Time is referred to as a "leave" in MyDay but is considered "time off."
The options that are available in MyDay are outlined below. Note that not all options are available to all employees. Follow any departmental instructions or requirements before requesting time off from work. Please review the linked Detailed Information for an overview of the option and detailed eligibility information. Union employees should refer to their collective bargaining agreements for their specific time off and leave eligibility details.

Time Off Types
The below "types" of time off are available for employees to request in Workday. Time Off Requests are routed to your manager for approval.
Please note: The COVID-19 leave legislation expires on July 31, 2025.

Covid Child Care | FT/PT Faculty, FT/PT Staff | Employees who are required to work on campus and are the primary caregiver for a child or elderly dependent whose school or place of care is closed, or whose childcare provider is unavailable due to Covid-19, may request up to 5 days of paid leave separate from vacation and/or floating holidays. |
Childcare Unpaid | FT/PT Faculty, FT/PT Staff | Provides an additional 5 days of unpaid time off for those who are the primary caregiver for a child or elderly dependent whose school or place of care is closed, or whose childcare provider is unavailable due to Covid-19. |
Leaves of Absence (LOA) Types
Employees may initiate a Leave of Absence Request for the below types in Workday, which will be routed to Human Resources. HR Benefits will follow up with details regarding your leave rights, obligations, and next steps, such as submitting any required documentation.
