Introductory Period Policy for Administrative Staff - 1. Guidance for Employees

The Introductory Period is a 90-day probationary period during which time the covered employee and manager evaluates the suitability of the placement. The probationary period allows an employee time to become proficient in the basic responsibilities of a new position and permits the manager to assess the individual’s performance.

Understand Expectations & Competencies

Below are expectations and competencies you will be measured on during the Introductory Period. Your manager will meet with you to discuss as noted in First 30 Days below.

  • Ability to meet expectations for all university performance competencies
  • Ability to learn and perform job duties
  • Quality of work
  • Productivity
  • Work habits
  • Cooperation
  • Attendance (exclusive of any job-protected time off)
  • Punctuality (exclusive of any job-protected time off)
  • Other standards and expectations specific to the employee’s work situation

Employee Checklist During the Introductory Period

First 30 Days

  • Carefully review your job description with your manager to clarify roles, responsibilities and performance competencies. Discuss what your priorities will be during the Introductory Period. After your discussion, your manager will set goals in MyDay for you to review.
  • Engage your manager in regular communication to clarify the performance expectations of your position.
  • Follow the guidance on the Welcome Guide.
  • Refer to Onboarding Help if you need additional support during the Introductory Period and beyond.

First 45 days

  • Your manager will schedule a discussion with you around day 45 (halfway through the Introductory Period) to discuss your progress toward meeting performance expectations.
  • You will review your priorities and goals with your manager and make any changes in MyDay if applicable (remember to ask your manager to approve any changes to your goals in MyDay).
  • Use learning and development resources to develop any competencies that have been identified as growth opportunities.

First 90 days

  • Continue to engage your manager in regular communication about your performance as well as their expectations. Solicit coaching and feedback to establish continuous development.
  • At the end of the 90-day period, your manager will discuss your performance with you, and formally communicate whether or not you have successfully completed the Introductory Period.

After successful completion of the Introductory Period

  • Your manager will speak to you and determine if your goals should be updated and refined for the current performance year, or if new goals need to be entered for the upcoming performance cycle.
  • If you need additional guidance, contact your Strategic HR Partner or HR Partner.
