Welcome Guide

Welcome to The New School! We are so glad you are here. As a New School employee, you're a vital part of the university's mission to prepare and inspire students to bring about positive change in the world. We hope you will find the resources below helpful as you navigate your first few weeks.

University Overview

Educational Approach

We will fulfill our mission by extending The New School's legacy as a non-traditional college and community, nimble and responsive to change, that:

  • Focuses on and engages with critical contemporary issues
  • Prioritizes humanity and culture in designing systems and environments to improve the human condition, an approach that draws on design thinking and the liberal, creative, and performing arts
  • Places collaborative, project-based learning at the center of the educational experience
  • Takes full advantage of our New York City location and connectivity to global urban centers.

Getting Started

We know starting a new job can be stressful and confusing as you learn new policies and protocols and acclimate to a new work environment. The checklists below outline tasks, procedures, and resources that will help.

CHECKLISTS

As noted in the checklists, if you find yourself getting stuck, refer back to Onboarding Help for assistance.

Additional Faculty Onboarding Information

Introductory Period (staff positions only)

The Introductory Period is a 90 day probationary period during which time the covered employee and manager evaluates the suitability of the placement. This allows an employee time to become proficient in the basic responsibilities of a new position and permits the manager to assess the individual’s performance.

As outlined in the checklists above, your manager or supervisor will meet with you to review your role and responsibilities, performance competencies, expectations, and any priorities for your first 90 days at the university. You should communicate with them regularly and leverage learning and development resources or Onboarding Help contacts if you need any support during this time.

Time Off & Benefits

The New School is committed to providing an array of comprehensive benefits intended to meet the needs of faculty and staff and their eligible dependents. The cards below provide detailed information on time off and benefits.

Technology

The checklists above list a number of the programs you will want to familiarize yourself with, such as our people and finance management platform (MyDay (Workday)) and our e-procurement solution (My New Source (SciQuest, Jaggaer)). Systems that are available university-wide are described in Systems Overview. IT also offers other programs and services that are outlined on IT Services A-Z.
